Natural components of the Perna canaliculus mussel work together to support joint health in a number of key areas. Our research on Perna canaliculus has demonstrated that Perna contains potent anti-inflammatory agents, including the essential Omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. Perna can alleviate inflammation by modulating the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as TNF-alpha, IL-1-, IL-2 and IL-6, cyclooxagenase enzymes and Immuoglobulin IgG. Perna has been shown to be an inhibitor of the COX -2 enzyme, which promotes inflammation. The presence of key GAGs in the product provides improved viscosity of synovial fluid, flexibility, and tensile strength of the articular cartilage.
The principle mechanisms of action of Perna include exerting an anti-inflammatory/analgesic response, reducing degradation of catabolic enzymes (which breakdown cartilage) and free radicals, and modulating the immune response to down regulate pro-inflammatory cytokines. Extensive clinical use in dogs, cats and horses has led to improved mobility, range of motion, and animal comfort.
N,N-Dimethyglycine is an important amino acid that can demonstrate a wide variety of health-building effects in companion animals. VetriScience® research has shown that this versatile nutrient can improve physical and mental performance, reduce the stress response, and improve cellular pathways by providing key building blocks, such as methyl groups and other metabolic intermediates found in the methylation cycle. CurcuVET® (Curcumin Phytosome®) Curcuma longa root Extract/Phosphatidylcholine Complex
Curcumin is the principle cuminoid orange pigment found in Tumeric, which offers potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory support to dogs and cats. CurcuVET® is the branded curcumin product from Indena which offers improved oral absorption by incorporating Phytosome® technology. This process complexes curcumin with phoshatidylcholine, which provides hydrolytical stability, as well as increases absorption and bioavailability of curcumin to the body. Pharmacokinetic studies demonstrate a nearly 30-fold increase in bioavailability as compared to standard curcumin extracts.
CurcuVET®’s mode of activity focuses on its ability to both maintain a healthy inflammatory response and provide antioxidant and hepatoprotective activity. As an antioxidant, curcumin has been shown to be an effective scavenger of both ROS and reactive nitrogen species in vitro. Casperome® (Boswellia Phytosome®) Boswellia serrata Extract/Phosphatidylcholine Complex
Casperome® is a highly standardized and purified mixture of the tripenoid acids found in the gum resin of Boswellia serrata. Due to the digestive tract’s poor absorption of these compounds, Casperome® has been formulated using the advanced Phytosome® technology to optimize bioavailability of active components. When complexed with selective phospholipids, the formulation offers a significant increase in both plasma and tissue concentrations (such as those found in the eye and brain) of the key components in Boswellia.
The key mode of activity for Casperome® lies in its proven anti-inflammatory response in both in vitro and animal studies. Boswellic acids, such as 11-keto-beta Boswellia (KBA) and its acetylated counterpart (AKBA), act as selective 5-lipoxygenase inhibitors, resulting in Boswellia’s ability to manage the inflammatory response. LeucoSelect® is the branded, standardized grape seed extract from Indena, which employs their Phytosome® technology for enhanced bioavailability. Grape seed extracts contain polyphenolic compounds known as oligomeric procyanidins (OPCs), which have been found to have pronounced antioxidant activity in the body. Procyanidins are derivatives of the flavin-3-ol class of flavonoids, including catechins and epicatechins. The OPCs in grape seed extracts consist of dimers, trimmers, and tetrameters, as well as higher molecular weight species, which generally have poor bioavailability. LeucoSelect® grape seed extract has a well-defined chemical composition critical to its therapeutic activity. To improve the biological activity and bioavailability, Indena has removed the higher molecular weight OPCs and concentrated the more active, smaller sized oligomers, formulating them with their patented Phytosome® technology (complexed with phosphatidylcholine).
Several clinical studies have demonstrated LeucoSelect® Phytosome®’s support for cardiovascular health. The OPCs are especially known for their capillary protective effect and anti-atherosclerosis activity, and for the ability to reduce oxidative stress. Trans-Resveratrol is a polyphenolic compound found in nature, primarily in red wines, grape juice, mulberries and peanuts. It has exhibited both anti-aging and immune building properties in studies. Multiple longevity studies have shown that trans–resveratrol can have life-extending effects, which most probably result from strong antioxidant and adaptogenic properties.
As a nutraceutical, it can support cardiovascular system, immune response and nervous system functions. It is largely known for its anti-inflammatory activity. Resverasyn® is a high purity, bioactive, microencapsulated formulation of trans-resveratrol. Microencapsulation protects the product from oxidation caused by light, heat and oxygen, allowing the tissues of the body to absorb and utilize a higher concentration of the actives.
Its principle mode of action is the activation of the enzyme Sirtuin 1, which deacylates the PGC-1 alpha (a peroxisome proliferator), thereby reducing the gene expression of inflammatory mediators. The results: an increase in lipolysis in the White Adipose tissue, increased insulin activity in the muscles and reduced inflammation in cells through a reduction of both expression of NF-kB (Nuclear factor-kappa beta) and formation of TNF-Alpha, a pro-inflammatory cytokine.

HyaMax® (Hyaluronic Acid) Low Molecular Weight Sodium Hyaluronate
HyaMax® is the standardized natural sodium salt of Hyaluronic Acid (HA) from Fenchem.
HA is a polysaccharide with a large molecular weight composed of repeating disaccharide units of Glucuronic Acid and N-acetyl glucosamine. It is a non-sulfated glycosaminoglycan (GAG) found in cartilage and joint synovial fluid, as well as in other connective tissue, skin and eyes. HA is the key component of joint tissue where it serves as the backbone of the very large proteoglycan aggregates, which, when combined with collagen, give cartilage its structure.
Its key function is to bind with large amounts of water (1000 times its own weight) for lubricating the movable parts of the joint, providing shock absorber activity. In the synovial fluid, HA acts as a lubricant to reduce wear and tear on the joints.
HyaMax® HA is a low molecular weight material (1.0 to 1.5 million Daltons). As an oral supplement, HA is primarily used to support joint and skin health.
The mechanism of action of oral intake of Hyaluronic Acid is not directly linked to providing building blocks for synthesis in the joints. Instead, once the low molecular HA is absorbed into the bloodstream, it communicates with the immune system to trigger an anti-inflammatory response. This action stimulates the production of new HA in the joint, which improves joint lubrication, shock absorption and comfort level.
The GI tract absorbs only 5-10 percent of the HA. Because the recommended dosage of HA is 0.1 mg per pound of body weight, only a relatively small amount is absorbed. Still, that small amount is adequate to stimulate the desired response. Research supports the use of HA supplements for joint health in both dogs and horses.
RST 247 (Proprietary Oil Blend, Soy Lecithin, Cranberry Powder)
RST 247 is a first-of-its-kind nutraceutical ingredient that focuses on the problems associated with “silent inflammation” in the body. This natural product is produced from functional, bioactive oils that have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, and is designed to keep the body’s inflammation response to acute tissue injury or irritation to a minimum.
